First time pet owner’s guide

As any new pet owner knows, it can be an exciting yet stressful time when you introduce a puppy or kitten in to your house. Not only do you have to get them comfortable in their new surroundings, you also have to make sure that you have everything they need and want.

There are a number of items that need to be checked off the list before you even bring your new four legged friend home. A number of items and necessities need to be checked off your list – these should include; toys, food, bedding, vet care and training. Petplan have compiled a list for you to prepare yourself for the arrival of the new kitten or puppy.

Essentials for puppies

  • Blanket and bedding
  • Crate or puppy pen
  • Food and water bowls
  • Puppy food
  • Chew items
  • Activity/squeaky toys
  • Collar and lead
  • Hot water bottle/heat pad
  • Grooming equipment

Essentials for kittens

  • Food and water bowls
  • Kitten food
  • Litter and litter tray
  • Cat carrier/basket
  • Rigid upright scratching post
  • High-sided cat bed
  • Toys

  • Kitten pen

Visiting the vet

When your puppy or kitten arrives home and settles in after a couple of days/weeks, it will be time to take them to the Vets for a check-up. Their first check-up should include:

  • A full tail to nose physical exam
  • Vaccinations (this can be talked about with your vet to decide what is needed as some breeds are more susceptible to some diseases)
  • Worming and flea treatments
  • Ask your vet for advice on a diet for your pet
  • You may want to consider neutering your pet which can be discussed with your vet
  • General advice on training, behaviour and pet insurance is also best to come straight from your Vet
  • If your pet isn’t microchipped already, it is best to do it as early as possible to save you the worry of them running away or getting lost
